Author's comments: Brenda Gaye, this one's for you! In this story, Bud & Harriett already moved into their new house... I didn't know the name of the town, so I picked one off the map. Characters' speaking parts are in double quotes ("text"); characters' thoughts are in single quotes ('text').

Tyson's Galleria

McLean, Virginia

It had been a long, tiring week for Admiral AJ Chegwidden. But he was finally finished. He could actually go back to his own office tomorrow. And dress in his summer white uniform again. 'Thank God! This black suit is hotter than blazes in this weather,' he thought to himself. He had spent the better part of the week at a civilian law firm, assisting the senior lawyers in a foreign military case. The SecNav had ordered it; AJ wasn't happy about it. He wouldn't have minded so much if he'd been allowed to send one of his people. But no! The SecNav insisted that it had to be AJ. And he had to be in civvies.

AJ growled at the stop light. As though it heard him, the light changed to green. He pulled his Escalade into the parking lot of the shopping mall, found a spot very close to an entrance, and parked. As he walked to the mall entrance, he noticed several people look at him and grin. 'What did I do? Forget to zip my pants?' he wondered. He casually looked down to be sure.

The Admiral wasn't used to people staring at him... except when he was in his Mess Dress or Dress Whites. Then women stared. Ogled is more like it. He even remembered one woman who drooled all over herself. AJ grinned as he remembered. He reached up and removed his black sunglasses as he walked down the mall corridor. He went directly to the Liljenquist & Beckstead jewelry store. His daughter's birthday was in two weeks, and he knew exactly what he wanted to send to her.

When he made his purchase, AJ retraced his steps back through the mall toward the parking lot. He put his sunglasses back on before he reached the exit. Then he heard the singing clock in F.A.O. Schwarz. It reminded him of his young Lieutenant. Bud Roberts was a fine officer. A good husband. A wonderful father. And he came home with only one leg. Came home from an assignment that AJ had strongly advised him to take. It just didn't seem fair. AJ didn't exactly feel guilty about it, neither did he feel blameless. He had stopped at the Roberts' house at least once a week since Bud's return to check on him. Each time, Bud appeared to be in good spirits. But AJ knew better. He knew Bud was putting up a front for his commanding officer.

AJ was going to drop by their house tomorrow, so he decided to see what he could find that might help to cheer Bud a little. 'Bud loves electronic toys. That robot at Christmas a few years ago... I wonder if I can find something like that.'

AJ turned around and walked back the few yards to the toy store's entrance. As he walked inside, he noticed people grinning at him again. 'What is it with these people?' he wondered. He reached up and removed his sunglasses, folding them, and putting them in his breast pocket. As he did so, a young boy watched him intently. AJ saw the child out of the corner of his eye; he turned to face him. The boy stared, gaping at AJ. AJ smiled and winked at him. Then he turned away from the child and began looking for the electronic toys.

The boy followed AJ with his eyes, never letting him get out of sight. "Woooow," he said to no one. But another child heard him.

"What? What'd you see?" asked another boy.

"He's one of them," the boy said.

"Who is? Who?" The first boy pointed at AJ who turned around at just that moment. He didn't notice the children, but the second child gasped. "Woooow! You're right! He is one of them."

"Come on, let's follow him. Maybe we'll get to see some real aliens," said the first boy.

"Excuse me," AJ approached a salesgirl. "I'm looking for the electronic toys."

"Oh, no problem. I'll show you," said the girl.

The girl wound her way through the toy aisles with AJ in tow until she reached the electronic toys. "Here you go. Anything in particular you're looking for?" she tried to be helpful.

"I'm looking for something for a grown man. He likes electronic toys. Anything with a computer in it, basically," AJ explained.

"Well, there's an electronic dart board, electronic football, and the typical phaser guns and junk like that. But for a grown man, I'd suggest something more like the personal cooling system or the power scooter."

AJ jerked his head up. "No!" The girl jumped at his forceful answer. AJ realized how loud he'd spoken. "I'm sorry," he said quieter. "The young man lost a leg overseas. A scooter is definitely out of the question."

The girl looked about ready to cry. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Is he your son?"

AJ shook his head. "No. But as good as." He cleared his throat and said, "He has a 3-year old son. Something they can play with together would be ideal. Do you have any robots?"

"Robots?" she sniffed her tears back. "Oooh, I don't think we have any in right now. We usually only carry those around Christmas. But let me run check; we may have one in the back." She disappeared around the corner leaving AJ to browse.

AJ chuckled when he saw the display of enormous guns. He picked one up and held it. He heard several small gasps behind him. As he turned around, he saw the same boy as was at the entrance, staring at him. Only now he had several other children with him. And they were all staring at him. "I told you so!" said the first boy.

"Woooow." "You're right." "Wonder if he's gonna use that?" "Never thought I'd really see one of them." "You think he'll zap us so we won't remember?" "That's his Ball gun!" "No, I think it's a Wacky gun." "Ball." "Wacky," the children rattled on top of each other.

AJ had no idea what they were running on about. Just as he was going to turn back around and set the huge gun down, he saw a teenage boy slip something in his shorts pocket, obviously preparing to steal it. AJ bellowed, "Your pocket isn't a very good shopping cart, you know."

The teenager turned around, prepared to give a belligerent answer. But when he saw AJ dressed in black, holding the gun in his hands, and the sunglasses peaking out of his breast pocket, he changed his mind. "No problem, man. I was just checking to be sure it would fit in my pocket. You know, if it's too big, I wouldn't want it," he lied.

AJ looked the boy over. 'How could anyone do that to their body on purpose? He must have 25 holes in each of his ears. And then his eyebrows, his nose, and even his tongue! No telling where else. Disgusting.' AJ replied, "Do I look like a fool to you, boy?" He didn't consciously do it, but he bounced the gun in his hands, bringing a look of fear on the boy's face.

"No, Sir. No fool. Definitely not a fool." 'That's just a toy gun. I just saw them,' he said to himself. 'Are you sure about that?' asked a little voice in his head. 'Are you sure he's not what he looks like?' 'That's not real... it's a movie.' 'Yeah, but what if it is real?'

AJ said, "Good, good. So put it back on the shelf." The boy obeyed. "Now I'd suggest you leave. Unless of course, you want to pay for the next thing you pick up."

The boy shook his head. "I'm outta here," and he turned and fled.

The children stood mesmerized until AJ bounced the gun in his hands again and looked down at them. They suddenly scampered away in every direction. AJ chuckled and set the gun back on the shelf just as the salesgirl returned carrying a large box. "I found one!" she said happily.

AJ took the robot out of the box and made sure it was what he wanted for Bud. He nodded, "Yes, this will do nicely." They made their way to the checkout, and AJ paid for the robot. "Can you wrap this?" he asked the cashier.

"Yes, of course. It'll take about 15 minutes."

"That's fine." AJ turned around and saw the same boy just around the corner. He had a small army of other children with him this time. And they were all staring. AJ walked around the corner and came up behind them. "Care to tell me why you keep staring at me?" he said gruffly.

A collective gasp went up from all the children in the group. They turned around to face him. AJ was staring down at the first boy. "You've been following me around this store since I came in here. What's so interesting about me?"

The boy's voice went up about an octave as he said, "I'm not an alien. Honest, I'm not. I'm human. Like you. And you don't have to zap me; I won't say a word!" He looked around and watched his army of new friends running like scared rabbits.

"An alien?" AJ repeated. "Zap you? What the h... heck are you talking about?" he caught himself just in time.

"Alan! There you are! I've been looking all over this store for you! Where have you been?"

AJ looked up to see a lovely woman calling to the boy. 'Hmm, probably 35, no more than 40, about 140 pounds, and stacked. Mmmm, nice... shoulder-length brunette hair with gorgeous brown eyes. And those dimples!'

"Mom!" the boy cried, seeing AJ looking at his mother. "Stay back!"

"What?" she said. "Why?"

"Don't come any closer, Mom! He might zap you! He's looking at you funny!"

"Zap me?" the woman said.

AJ realized he was, indeed, staring at the woman, so he turned his attention back to the boy. "Now look..."

"Alan, are you bothering this man?" she interrupted, moving forward to her son.

"No, Mom! Stay back!" he insisted.

"I will not stay back. What's wrong with you?"

"Mom, he's one of them!"

"One of who?" AJ and the mother asked at the same time.

"Men in Black!"

AJ was still clueless. 'Men in black?'

Whereas the mother smiled indulgently. "Oooh. Yes, you're right. He might just be. Maybe we should ask him."

"No, Mom!"

"Alan, the Men in Black are the good guys, remember?"

"Yea, but if you know who they are, they'll zap you!" Alan reminded his mother.

"But since we didn't see him do anything, I think we're safe."

"But I did, Mom. I did!"

"You did what, Alan?" she asked.

"I saw him chase an alien out of the store!"

"An alien?"

"Yeah! He was dressed like a teenager, but he was an alien, all right. He had rings all over his ears and his face. And he had big things in his mouth. I was afraid he was going to spew all over the place!" Alan explained. AJ tried not to laugh. He looked at the boy's mother, whom, it was obvious, was also trying not to laugh. "But he didn't. The Man in Black scared him away with his Wacky Gun."

"I don't see a gun, Alan."

"That's because you only see it when he needs it," Alan explained patiently.

Just then the salesgirl walked up to AJ. "Here's your package, Sir."

AJ took the large box from her. "Thank you."

"That's his gun, Mom," Alan whispered.

AJ turned back to the boy. "No, actually, Alan, it's not my gun. It's a present for a friend of mine."

"Are you gonna zap us?" Alan dared, looking straight into AJ's eyes.

AJ shook his head. "Not this time."

Alan ventured a small smile. "Really? Gee, thanks!"

AJ nodded his head in acknowledgement. Then he reached in his pocket and pulled out his sunglasses. He was putting them on as he heard the mother stifle a laugh. He looked up. "Something funny?"

"No," she answered quickly. "Not a thing, Agent Zee."

AJ looked at her strangely, then turned and left the mall. Every person he passed seemed to grin at him. "What the hell is going on?" he muttered as he reached his vehicle. As he climbed in, his cell phone rang. "Chegwidden!" he barked.

"Colonel MacKenzie here, Sir. We have a situation. Are you able to come to the office?"

"On my way, Colonel," AJ said as he started the SUV and pulled out of his parking place.

AJ noticed the looks he received from the Marine guards as he walked through the building. 'Should have called them on it... but I'm not in uniform, so I guess I'll let it slide. This time.'

He exited the elevator and walked into the JAG Ops bullpen. Commander Harmon Rabb and Lieutenant Colonel Sarah MacKenzie looked up at the man in black. "Admiral?" Rabb said incredulously.

"What's the situation?" AJ was down to business instantly. He moved into his office and the two officers followed.

Mac briefed the Admiral on the situation, and the three of them discussed a plan of action.

"Admiral, I really don't think Ms. Alexander is going to be a problem. She sounded very nice on the phone," said Harm.

"Harm, just because she sounded nice on the phone doesn't mean..." Mac started to argue.

"I know that, Mac," Harm interrupted. "But I do think she's willing to cooperate..."

"Well, no matter what you think, Commander, I want this case handled with kid gloves," said AJ. "She's the widow of a Medal of Honor recipient. She deserves anything we can do for her. I do not want her husband's name dragged through the mud." He turned to the Colonel. "Mac, I want you to ensure that the press doesn't get wind of this. I don't want this turning into a dog and pony show."

"Aye, Sir."

When they finished their planning, the three officers walked out of the building together. AJ reached into his pocket and pulled out his sunglasses. He set them on his face and noticed that both Harm and Mac grinned. Harm made a comment, "So, you're kind of into the movie, eh, Sir?"

"What movie?" AJ snapped. He was really getting tired of being stared at this afternoon.

"You really do look like one of them," said Mac.

"One of who?" AJ asked impatiently.

"I take it you've never seen the movie?"

"I don't get to the movies very often. What movie?"

"'Men in Black'... and now 'Men in Black II' is out."

"And..." AJ prompted.

"And you're dressed just like them. And the sunglasses are perfect!" Neither Harm nor Mac could help their laughter now.

AJ just shook his head, climbed in his vehicle, and drove home.

JAG Headquarters

Falls Church, Virginia

Admiral Chegwidden arrived at the office early. He had a lot to catch up on, having been on an offsite assignment for the entire week. He hadn't emerged from his office since his arrival at 0630. His Yeoman, Petty Officer Tiner, kept his mug full of hot coffee and brought him a couple of donuts. He was almost finished going through his hardcopy mail when Tiner buzzed him.

"What, Tiner?" he barked into the intercom.

"Excuse me, Admiral, but Colonel MacKenzie and Commander Rabb are here for their 1000 appointment."

"I don't remember a 1000 appointment."

"Well, Sir, it was only scheduled this morning. Ms. Alexander is with them. They'd like you..."

AJ interrupted. "Send them in, Tiner."

"Aye, aye, Sir."

Tiner opened the Admiral's office door. Mac walked in first, followed by Ms. Alexander, and then Harm. AJ rose from his seat as they entered and smiled broadly at Ms. Alexander. 'Well I'll be damned.'

Mac spoke first, "Good morning, Admiral. May I introduce Ms. Brenda Alexander. Ms. Alexander, this is Admiral AJ Chegwidden."

"It's Mrs. if you don't mind. But I'd prefer Brenda anyway," she spoke to Mac. Then she turned her attention to the Admiral. "Good morning, Ad... miral... Do I know you, Sir?" she hesitated.

"I believe you know me as Agent Zee," AJ replied evenly. "I look a bit different in all white than in all black, I suppose."

Brenda gasped. "Oh my God! It's you!" she laughed. "Oh no... I can't believe it!" AJ laughed with her, leaving Harm and Mac to wonder. "I'm so sorry about all that, Admiral."

AJ shook his head and held up his hand. "No; no need for that." He nodded at his officers, "My people told me last night about the movie."

"You really haven't seen it? Not even the first one?"

"Nope. I don't get to movies much," AJ replied. "So, your son thinks I'm a character in the movie, I take it."

"I'm afraid so. Alan is still young enough to believe that movie characters are real."

"And of course, you helped matters by calling me Agent Zee."

She laughed, "Yes, and as soon as you left, Alan wanted to know how I knew which one you were!"

"I guess I'll have to make a point of seeing the movie so I know why you chose that character for me."

"Oh, Agent Zee wasn't in the movie. There was... let me see... Agent Kay and Agent Jay. And an Agent Tee, I believe. So I just picked another letter of the alphabet!" They laughed together until she continued, "It's only because of the way you were dressed, you understand. All in black. With the black sunglasses. And the movie just came out last week. Alan's seen it twice already. And now after meeting you, he wants to see it again! And I'm sure he'll convince one of his uncles to take him this weekend. He has them all wrapped around his little finger," she sighed. "Ever since his father died..." her voice trailed off.

AJ came around to the front of his desk and took her by the elbow to guide her to one of the big leather chairs by the fireplace. Even when there wasn't a fire blazing, that was his favorite spot in his office. "Please, why don't we sit down?" he said gently. He glanced back to Harm and Mac and motioned them to take seats, as well. "Your husband was..."

Brenda interrupted him. "I know what my husband was. And he wasn't what this young whippersnapper is calling him."

AJ grinned. 'Young whippersnapper? Haven't heard that phrase in a good while.' "Mrs. Alexander..."

"Brenda. Please," she interrupted again.

AJ started over. "Brenda. This office investigates and prosecutes military crimes. That's what we're here for. Any charges filed through this office have to be investigated." AJ watched Brenda straighten her back like a board. "That's not to say that all charges are valid. My officers are well trained; they know how to find the truth. And that's exactly what we're going to do. Find the truth."

"I already know the truth," she snapped.

AJ nodded. "I'm sure you do. But we have to prove it... prove that your husband was innocent of the charges. Or guilty, as the case..."

"He didn't do what..."

"Brenda," AJ said softly. "I've assigned my best officers to this case. Let them do their jobs. Answer their questions. Let them go through your husband's belongings if they ask to. Cooperate with them." She looked at him belligerently. "Will you do that?" he asked gently. "Will you help us clear his name?"

Brenda was fighting tears. She didn't want anyone going through Ben's things. She had finally sorted through everything only two months ago and given a lot to the Vietnam Veterans Association. "There isn't much left. I gave most of his things away. The things that Alan wouldn't want later in life, anyway." She bit her lip. "All right. I'll allow it. I'll answer your questions. I just want his name cleared of these charges."

AJ smiled warmly at her. "Good." He turned to his officers. "You two go ahead and get started. I'll bring Mrs. Alexander to you in a few minutes."

Harm and Mac were surprised, but they didn't show it. They rose from their seats, came to attention stance, and left.

AJ turned back to Brenda. "You okay?" he asked, handing her his handkerchief.

She took it and smiled. "Thank you." She dabbed her eyes and wiped her nose. "I'm sorry about this," she said.

"No need to be sorry. You're having to go through something right now that shouldn't..." he stopped. He was, after all, the JAG. He couldn't voice his opinion. Not now. Not yet. "Brenda, I know this is a difficult time for you..."

She looked up and smiled. "Yes, it is. But you've made it a bit easier. I think it helped, our meeting yesterday. You don't seem so threatening as I thought you would. I was really dreading coming in here today."

"I'm glad you did come, though."

"So am I," she replied quickly. Then she smiled. "Thank you for being so kind, Admiral."

"It's AJ. Please."

"Is that appropriate? With the case and all?"

"We met before I knew about the case," he told her, stretching the truth just slightly. They hadn't actually met. They'd spoken.

"Yes, we did, didn't we?" she agreed. "Wait until I tell Alan who you really are. He won't believe me. Of course, he'll be scared to death all over again because you're a 2-star Admiral!"

"Why don't you bring him in with you next time? Then he can see for himself that I don't usually wear black... and that I'm not all that scary," AJ chuckled.

Brenda looked at him for a few moments without responding. "You're amazing, you know that?" she said in awe.

AJ shook his head. "I'm just a man, Brenda."

"Oh no," she breathed. "Far more than 'just a man'." Then she giggled and said, "You're Agent Zee! A defender of the Earth!"

Activity in the bullpen stopped as the two of them laughed together, AJ escorting Brenda to Mac's office.

Old Dominion Drive

McLean, Virginia

AJ was on his way to the Roberts' home. He was pleased with the robot; he was sure it would help to cheer Bud a little. 'Well, little AJ will like it, anyhow,' he reasoned. The traffic suddenly stopped and moved at a snail's pace. "Oh great. Now what?" As he inched his way forward, he could see a car with the hood up. As he got closer, he saw the little red Grand Am. It was obvious that it was a woman who needed help. No police cars were around, so AJ decided to pull over and see if he could help.

He climbed out of his vehicle and walked up to the car, tapping on the window. The woman turned and looked at him and they both smiled. Brenda rolled down her window. "I don't believe it!"

"Neither do I. Talk about having good luck..."

"Good luck? My car quit. How is that good luck?" she argued.

"Not you. Me," he grinned. "Let me take a look..." he said as he walked around to the front of the car.

"Mom, you know who he looks like?" Alan asked from the back seat. "Agent Zee that we saw last night. Except he's not in a black suit."

It wasn't a minute later when AJ was back at her window. "You need a new battery."

"How do you know?" she asked, opening her door and climbing out. "It was running fine... and then it just quit! Wouldn't the battery die slowly?"

"Not when a terminal breaks off," he replied, walking her around to the front of the car. He showed her the problem. "The positive terminal broke away from the battery. You're going to have to be towed."

"Oh no."

AJ nodded. "I'm afraid so."

"Wouldn't you know it. I just let my AAA expire."

AJ winked at her. "Let me take care of it for you."

"Oh no, Admiral, I couldn't..."

"It's AJ, remember?" He walked back to his vehicle and grabbed his cell phone, dialing a number as he walked back to Brenda. She had moved to the passenger side of the car and stood by Alan's window. "This is Admiral AJ Chegwidden. I have a red Grand Am with a bad battery stuck on Old Dominion in McLean, heading south. Have someone from the motor pool come pick it up and change the battery. I want it finished and back at JAG by 2200 tonight."

The voice on the other end of the line snapped off a chipper, "Aye, aye, Sir. Not a problem, Admiral."

"Good. Thanks." AJ disconnected the call. "So, where can I take you?" Brenda stood gaping at him. "You were obviously headed somewhere..." AJ offered.

"Home. We were just going to go home and spend a quiet evening with a movie or something," she finally managed to say.

"Well, if you'll tell me where 'home' is, I'll take you there. Or..." he hesitated. He really shouldn't...

"Or?" she prompted.

'Oh what the hell, why not!?' "Or you can spend the evening with me," AJ blurted out. "I'm just going to a friend's home for a short visit. Then we can do whatever you'd like..."

"Can we go see 'Men in Black'?" interrupted Alan from the backseat.

AJ smiled as Brenda said, "Alan, you've already seen that twice. You don't need to see it again."

"Ah, Mom... please??" he begged.

She just shook her head and said, "What am I going to do with him?"

AJ chuckled. "Take him a third time, I suppose."

Alan shrieked in the backseat. "Hoo yah!!! We're goin' to see 'Men in Black' again!!"

AJ leaned over to Brenda and whispered, "Will he stay awake through the late show?"

Brenda shrugged her shoulders. "I have no idea."

Roberts Residence

Greenbrier Park, Virginia

AJ pulled his vehicle into the Roberts' driveway. Before he unlocked the doors, he said, "I need to tell you that Bud and Harriett Roberts are both Lieutenants in the Navy. They were both at JAG until earlier this year. Bud was transferred to an aircraft carrier as the JAG officer. In May, he was in country... and he stepped on a landmine." Brenda gasped. Alan's face was as white as a sheet. "He lost a leg."

"Oh, AJ, that's awful. The poor man," Brenda said.

"If you or Alan would prefer not to go inside..."

"Of course we'll go inside, AJ. Won't we, Alan?" Brenda turned and asked her son. She smiled encouragingly and he nodded.

"Very well." AJ unlocked the doors and they all climbed out. AJ grabbed a large bag from the back of the Escalade. "Don't want to forget this."

Harriett answered the door and was delighted at their company. "Admiral! It's so good to see you. Thank you for coming by."

"Harriett, may I present Brenda Alexander and her son, Alan," AJ offered.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," said Brenda.

"Oh, the pleasure is all mine, I assure you. Any friend of the Admiral is welcome here," Harriett gushed. "Please, do come inside." She turned and called into the house, "Bud! Bud, the Admiral is here!"

"I'll be right out, Honey!" Bud called from the back of the house.

"Harriett, wouldn't it be better for me to go to him as before?" asked AJ.

"Oh no, Sir. He's walking a lot better now with the crutch. And he was adamant that he come out here tonight if you came by. He wants you to see how well he's progressing," she said.

Bud made his way down the hall and into the living room. "Admiral! It's good to see you, Sir. Thank you for dropping by."

AJ walked over to Bud and laid his hand on Bud's shoulder. "Haven't missed a Friday night yet, have I, Bud?"

"No, Sir. And I can't tell you how much that means to me. To both of us," Bud said, looking at his wife.

"I brought a couple of people with me tonight; I hope you don't mind."

"Absolutely not, Sir." Bud looked over at Brenda and smiled. "Very nice, Admiral," he whispered.

AJ grinned. "Bud, this is Brenda Alexander and her son, Alan."

Just then little AJ came running down the hall squealing, "Adm'l AJ! Adm'l AJ!" He took a flying leap and fortunately, big AJ caught him in his arms.

"Well, hello, little man!" grinned the Admiral.

"Who's that?" the little boy asked, pointing a finger at Alan.

"His name is Alan. Do you think you could take Alan with you into the play room for a little while?" AJ asked as he set the boy down.

"Aye, aye, Sir!" little AJ quipped. He walked over to Alan and took his hand. "Come on. Let's go play trains!"

Alan was almost 5 years older than the little tyke, but he decided that he'd play along. 'After all, the Admiral is taking us to see "Men in Black" later.'

Harriett motioned for AJ and Brenda to sit down. But before AJ took his seat, he took the box out of the shopping bag and handed it to Bud. "Got you a little something to play with, Bud. Hope you like it."

"To play with, Sir?" queried Bud. AJ nodded. Bud ripped the paper off the box and opened it. "A robot!?" He lifted his eyes to his former CO.

"I remember your liking one very much like that... Christmas a few years back," AJ explained.

"Admiral, I've wanted a robot for years! Harriett would never let me buy one." Bud was thrilled with his toy. "Wow, this is great! Thank you, Sir. Really. Thank you so much."

Harriett excused herself to go make a pot of coffee, and Brenda joined her in the kitchen. "Can I help with anything?" she asked her hostess.

"Oh no, I have it. But thank you," Harriett replied.

"How long have you known AJ?" Brenda asked quietly.

"Bud started working for him in January of '97. I met him that March."

"Bud or AJ?" Brenda asked for clarification.

"The Admiral. I met Bud the last of January the same year. Then I met the Admiral in March."

"Oh, I see. And when did you and Bud get married?"

"In May of '98. Little AJ came a year later."

"And you named him after your CO?"

Harriett nodded. "The Admiral means a lot to both Bud and me. He's done so much for us. We decided the best way we could honor him was to name our son after him." Harriett giggled. "Then he even had to deliver the baby on the floor of his office!"

"No! You're joking!"

Harriett shook her head. "Serious as a heart attack. I went into labor and no one but the Admiral knew what to do. He delivered little AJ, tied off the cord, everything!"

"My husband was like that. He could do anything," Brenda remembered.

"I wondered about him..." Harriett ventured.

"He was Commander Ben Alexander. He died four years ago. Alan was only three. Just your son's age."

"I'm so sorry," Harriett offered, teary-eyed. "What happened?" Then she thought better of it, "If you feel like talking about it. You don't have to, certainly." She turned back to the counter and poured two mugs of coffee.

"No, it's okay. I'm glad to tell you. Especially you. Maybe it will help you when you have a hard time with your pain about... Bud's leg." Harriett looked at her questioningly. "Ben stepped on a landmine, too. He wasn't as lucky as your husband." Harriett gasped. "It was best that he died, actually. He lost both his legs, his right arm, and had shrapnel imbedded in his brain that they'd never have been able to remove. He lived for about a week after the accident. He was in so much pain. Every time he woke up, it was so horrible to watch. I said goodbye to him over and over, because I knew he couldn't live." Brenda couldn't go on. Harriett put her arms around her and cried with her.

"I'm so sorry, Brenda. I didn't know." Harriett looked up at her after a few minutes. "And you're right. It will help me to know how fortunate Bud and I are. Thank you for sharing with me."

"I just need a minute, okay?" asked Brenda, her tears still streaming down her face.

Harriett nodded and left the kitchen with the two mugs of not-so-hot coffee. When she reached the living room, Bud said, "I was wondering what happened to you, Sweetie."

"Harriett?" AJ noticed the wet streaks on her face before Bud saw her. "Are you okay?"

She nodded and handed Bud a mug. "But I think you might want to go to Brenda. She could use a pair of strong arms right about now."

AJ was out of his seat in a flash. He rounded the corner to the kitchen and found Brenda leaning against a counter, her hands covering her face. He moved quietly to her and folded her into his arms. "Shhh, there now, Darlin'," he whispered to her as he stroked her back.

They stood thus for several minutes, Brenda moving closer to AJ's chest until she was crushing herself against him. She looked up into his eyes and tried to smile. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean to..."

AJ touched his right index finger to her lips. "Shhh. No apologies... unless they're from me. I should have realized what memories would stir up by bringing you here. It's my fault, Brenda."

"You know how he died?"

"I read his entire file this afternoon. I wanted to know the man whose wife I..."

"Widow," she interrupted. "I'm his widow, AJ. Not his wife anymore."

AJ nodded. "Whose widow I want to pursue."

"Pursue? Is that what you're doing? Pursuing me?" she teased.

"Damn straight," he breathed in her ear, sending chills up her spine.

Brenda lifted her face to his. "I'm glad. Very glad."

She almost didn't get her last word out as AJ lowered his mouth to hers, taking control of her lips and parting them with his tongue. He moved his inside of her mouth and she sucked it gently, moaning her pleasure.

"Mom!" they heard Alan's voice from the other room, so broke apart.

"Coming, Alan!" she called back.

AJ said, "If we're going to go to that movie tonight, we should get going. It starts at 2135."

"How did you know that?" she asked over her shoulder as they walked back to the living room.

"I thought I'd catch it tonight after I left here... see what the fuss is all about," AJ confessed.

"Mom, is it okay if I stay here and play with AJ tomorrow?" Alan asked as the two boys came into the living room.

"Stay here? Alan, you can't just invite yourself to spend the night," scolded Brenda.

"Oh, he's more than welcome, Brenda," said Harriett. "They're having a lot of fun together, despite the difference in their ages."

Brenda looked from Harriett to AJ to Alan. "Are you sure that's what you want to do? Stay here instead of seeing the movie again?"

"It's too late, Mom. I'd fall asleep anyway. Uncle Bill said he'd take me again next week."

Brenda sighed. "Well, okay. If you're sure."

Little AJ and Alan jumped up and down in their excitement. "Come on! Let's go play some more!" cried Alan.

"Harriett, are you sure about this?" Brenda asked.

"Absolutely. He's a delightful boy. And he plays so well with little AJ."

Brenda reached in her purse and handed Harriett a personal calling card. "Call me if anything happens and you need me to come and get him."

AJ tapped her on the shoulder, and she turned questioning eyes to him. "Now, what would you like to do with the rest of the evening?"

"Well, I believe you said you had planned to go see the movie. So I think that's what we should do."

"I can see that anytime..."

"No, no. We'll go. That's the right of it."

Cineplex Odeon Fairfax Square

Vienna, Virginia

AJ and Brenda sat in the last row on the far side of the movie theater. AJ had slipped his arm around the back of Brenda's seat as soon as the movie started. He gradually moved it to her shoulders, and she leaned into his side. The movie was good. Stupid. But funny. He could certainly understand now why the children had stared at him so on Thursday.

AJ glanced down at Brenda; she was moving her hand up and down his thigh. He liked it. He liked it a lot. He used his left hand and stroked her cheek, bringing her face closer to his. He buried his tongue in the recesses of her mouth and she moaned. "Shh, Darlin'," he said in her mouth. "You have to be quiet in here. You want to just leave?" She shook her head no.

AJ kissed her again. Then he moved his arm from her shoulders and ran it up and down her thigh. She squirmed in her seat, and shifted so her shorts were loose on her legs. It was obvious what she wanted, so AJ slipped his hand up the left leg of her shorts. He moved his hand up... up... expecting to stroke her through her panties. He was shocked to find none! He turned and looked at her. "They're in my purse. I took them off in the ladies room before we sat down," she whispered in his ear.

AJ grinned as he moved his fingers through her curls and stroked her folds. This was a pleasant surprise. He certainly had no intention of making love to this fabulous woman tonight when he picked her up on the side of the road. But it sure looked like that's what was going to happen. 'Hoo yah!' he thought to himself.

As the movie progressed, Brenda wiggled and squirmed while AJ stroked her. Then she slid down in her seat and spread her legs apart, giving AJ better access. 'Thank goodness there's no one around us,' she thought. He slid his finger inside of her and she almost gasped. He slid a second finger inside of her and flicked his thumb over her clit. His hand was there for only a couple of minutes when he felt her contractions around his fingers. Some time later, she put her right hand on his, trying to pull it away from her. "No more, please... I can't be quiet anymore..." she begged. He chuckled lightly and moved his hand. He brought it to his lips and licked his fingers as she watched in the dark theater. "Ooooh," she moaned.

"Shhh, Darlin'."

Brenda tried to move her hand to AJ's groin, but he wouldn't let her. She tried again. He pulled her hand away. She looked up at him and asked, "Why?" in a hurt tone.

"I know my limitations, Brenda. I'm not quiet. I can't let you touch me in here. We'll have to wait until the movie is over," AJ whispered in her ear.

"The hell we will," Brenda whispered back. She stood up and pulled on AJ's arm. "Let's go. Now."

"The movie..."

"We're not watching it anyway..."

AJ took her hand in his and led her out of the dark theater and to his waiting vehicle. Before they'd even reached the exit of the parking lot, Brenda was leaning over in the seat, her head in AJ's lap. She unbuttoned and unzipped his jeans, reached her hand inside his shorts, and pulled him free. "Oh God..." AJ groaned. "Brenda, we should wait until..."

"Oh no. I'm not waiting another minute to have you in my mouth. If you don't want to drive while I'm doing this, you'd better pull over," she told him.

The only problem with that: they were now on a two-lane road with no shoulders. So AJ kept driving. And Brenda kept licking. Sucking. Nipping. Her hot, wet mouth engulfed his manhood, and it drove him wild. "Darlin'... Darlin'... wait... please... wait a minute..." he begged. "Let me find someplace to pull over."

Brenda ignored him. She continued to suckle him; she cradled his testicles in her hand and massaged them roughly. "Oh God..." AJ groaned. He finally saw a wide spot in the road where he could pull over, and pull over he did. Then Brenda really went to town. She sucked his penis as hard as she could, teasing the head with her tongue. She squeezed his balls and twisted his hair around her fingers. "I'm almost there, Darlin'," he said in warning so she could back away. But she didn't. She lowered her mouth over him completely and sucked hard. AJ burst inside of her mouth and she swallowed every drop of him. She squeezed his balls and more semen spewed forth into her waiting mouth.

Now that it was over, though, Brenda felt awful. 'Oh my God. What have I done? He must think I'm a total slut! I only just met the man, and I just... I just... Oh God...'

AJ felt Brenda tense, and he knew she was regretting what happened between them. "Brenda, I'm sorry. This was all my fault. I should never have..."

She interrupted him. "Your fault? How could it possibly be your fault? I'm the one who practically stripped for you in the theater. I'm the one who spread her legs so wide you could have screwed me right there... and not just with your fingers! And I'm the one who forced you to sit there while I took you..."

"Brenda, you didn't force me to do anything."

"You must think I'm a total slut," she cried.

"I don't think anything of the kind," AJ replied quickly.

"I don't know how you couldn't."

"Brenda..."

"AJ, I'm not. I'm not a slut. Really. This is the first time... It's been so long... I haven't been with anyone... not since Ben died..." her tears flowed freely down her face as she tried to explain through her sobs.

"Darlin', it's okay." AJ pulled her into his embrace and cradled her as best he could with a steering wheel in the way. After her sobbing died down, he spoke gently. "Let me take you home now. Tell me where you live."

She shook her head. "My car should be at JAG by now. Just take me there and I'll go home myself."

"Brenda, I don't think you should be alone tonight. Not now." She looked up at him, her eyes bright with tears. "I won't touch you, Darlin'. I'll just be there in case you need someone. We'll get your car tomorrow. Okay?"

She bit her lip and nodded. "I live in Arlington," she sniffed. AJ pulled back onto the road and headed in that general direction. She mumbled to herself, "Slut. That's what you are. How could you..."

"Brenda, I don't want you to ever say that about yourself again." AJ reached over and laid his right hand on Brenda's knee. "You are not a slut. Far from it."

She turned and looked at him. "You really mean that, don't you?" she hiccupped, and then giggled because of it. "Excuse me." AJ smiled and wiped the tears from her cheeks with his right hand.

"Yes, I do. I don't know what happened between us tonight. I certainly didn't expect this. I don't as a rule end up with my hand in a woman's pants the first time we go out. But there's just something about you... something that draws me to you. I felt it yesterday at the toy store when I first saw you. Then again this morning in my office. And tonight, it was murder keeping my hands to myself at Bud and Harriett's."

"You felt it, too?" she asked. AJ nodded. "I couldn't believe it. I've... I've not felt this way about a man since Ben died."

"Brenda, I'm considerably older than you are," AJ said.

"You couldn't be much older than Ben was," she said.

AJ grinned. "You're right. I'd forgotten that. He was 45 when he died 3 years ago, wasn't he?"

She nodded. "Mmm hmm... just turned 45, in fact."

"That means he was 3 years younger than me."

"I had no problem with 11 years difference. Fourteen years isn't a big jump from there."

AJ reached his hand up to her cheek. "I'm glad."

"Take the next left," she instructed him. Three minutes later, they were at her house. Before they climbed out, Brenda reached her hand to AJ's thigh. "AJ, I want you to stay the night."

He nodded. "I planned to. Don't want you to be alone tonight. But I'll sleep on the sofa."

"No. I want you in my bed. I want you to make love to me. Please, AJ. Say you'll stay with me."

"Are you sure that's what you want, Brenda?"

She nodded in the darkness. "I'm sure."

AJ awoke feeling a warm soft body next to him. But his neck felt strange... wet. 'Wet?' he wondered. He turned his head slightly and realized that the pillow was wet, too. 'Tears! She's crying...' Then he heard her soft whimper. AJ moved his hand and rubbed her back gently. "You okay, Darlin'?" he whispered.

Brenda sniffed and nodded into AJ's neck and chest. "I had a dream."

"Must not have been a good dream if you're crying," AJ said gently.

She shook her head. "It wasn't."

"You want to talk about it?" he offered.

"No," she said quickly. "I want you inside of me again. Is that okay?" she sniffed.

AJ chuckled. "Oh, that'll be just fine, Darlin'." AJ scooted out from under her and eased himself over her. He made love to her slowly and gently this time. They'd been rather fast and furious earlier, rougher than he usually was with a new partner. But she wanted it that way, so he obliged. As he eased himself inside of her now, he kissed her lightly. "You're so beautiful, Brenda," he whispered in her mouth.

When AJ awoke the next time, Brenda wasn't there. When he smelled coffee, he decided she must be in the kitchen. He got up, visited the bathroom, and then joined her at the kitchen table. "Good morning," she said quietly.

"Yes it is. A very good morning," AJ smiled as he leaned over and kissed her soundly. He knew from her response to his kiss, or rather... the lack of response, that something was wrong. "Brenda?"

"Can we go get my car soon, please?" she asked.

"Of course we can, Darlin'. We can do anything you'd like." AJ had a feeling he knew what was coming next. Her next words proved him right.

"I made a mistake last night, AJ. I'm not ready for this. I'm sorry," she said quietly.

AJ closed his eyes and sighed inwardly. Then he squatted in front of her. "No, Brenda. I'm the one who's sorry. I'm sorry for taking advantage of you." She tried to argue with him; she honestly didn't believe that he took advantage. But he kept talking. "I should have realized you were in a vulnerable state, what with all that's going on right now... the charges against your husband, and all. I shouldn't have pursued you. Not yet, anyway." He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "I'll go get dressed, and we can leave right away."

JAG Headquarters

Falls Church, Virginia

The ride to JAG Ops was a quiet one. Whenever AJ attempted to start a conversation, Brenda would turn and stare out the side window. A minute or so later, he would hear her sniff, and he knew she was battling tears again. Finally they reached the JAG parking lot, and her car was there waiting for them. AJ walked around to the passenger side and helped Brenda out of his large vehicle. He walked her to her car and had her pop the hood so he could check the new battery. As he dropped the hood in place, she started the ignition.

AJ walked to the driver's window and leaned over. "Brenda, please believe me when I tell you I don't do this regularly. I'm not much of a ladies man." He watched Brenda smile slightly. "You don't believe me?"

"I believe you," she almost whispered. She didn't really though. 'This gorgeous man? Women must be all over him... just like I was last night. Oh, Brenda... what must he think of you?'

"I don't want you to be a one-night stand. Please, Brenda. When you're ready, call me."

She nodded her agreement, but somehow AJ knew she'd never call him. If he wanted to have a relationship with this woman, he would have to do the calling. 'Give her enough time and then call her. But how much time is enough? He's been dead for 4 years.'

AJ watched her drive away. Since he was already there, he decided to go on up to his office and do some more catching up from last week's absence. He noticed Mac's car in the parking lot, so he wasn't surprised to see her hard at work when he walked through the bullpen.

"Admiral!" she called to him. "Do you have a minute, Sir?"

AJ nodded and walked into her office. "Sure, Mac. What's up?"

"Sir, I just came across something in my research of Commander Alexander." AJ raised an eyebrow and waited for Mac to continue. "Sir, evidently he was accused on more than one occasion of beating his wife."

"What?!" AJ bellowed. He grabbed at the file in Mac's hand. "Let me see that!"

"Each time, he was cleared before it ever went to formal charges," Mac explained as she handed him the folder. She let him read for a couple of minutes before continuing. "It was always the same person accusing him... a Daniel Heyer."

"Where is this Heyer now?" AJ asked.

"That's the interesting thing, Sir. Daniel Heyer is stationed here in DC. And he just happens to be..."

"Don't tell me. Related to the jerk filing the charges against Alexander now?" AJ interrupted.

Mac nodded. "Yes, Sir. Heyer is Lieutenant Dreiver's brother-in-law."

"The plot thickens," AJ mumbled. He looked up at Mac. "Talk to Mrs. Alexander. Get her to tell you about those accusations. Find out if there was any basis for them. And find out if she knows either Heyer or Dreiver."

"She doesn't know Lieutenant Dreiver, Sir. I asked her that yesterday."

"Well, find out about the other one," AJ said as he turned to leave Mac's office.

"Aye, Sir."

JAG Headquarters

Falls Church, Virginia

An irate Brenda Alexander marched into the JAG Ops bullpen and headed straight for Mac's office. "What the hell do you mean by asking me that!?" she screamed. "Who the hell told you about those accusations? They were completely and totally unfounded and they were supposed to have been stricken from Ben's records! So how did you find out about them!?"

All activity in the bullpen ceased at Brenda's outburst. AJ heard a disturbance and left his office to investigate. When he opened his office door, he heard Brenda's voice. He walked into Mac's office and said, "Is there a problem here?"

Brenda spoke as she turned around, "Damn straight, there's a problem..." When she saw it was AJ, she paled and then burst into tears.

"Colonel, if you would give us a minute, please?" AJ said as he took Brenda in his arms and rocked her. "Shhh, now, Darlin'. It's okay," cooed AJ to her.

Mac quickly left her office and shut the door behind her. Harm was just outside her office, and they looked at each other askance. "Did you know that they're involved?" Mac asked Harm.

"Involved?! No! They only just met..." said Harm.

"I don't know when they met," offered Harriett who walked up behind them, "but they were like a sweet little family on Friday night at our house."

"What?!" cried both Harm and Mac.

Harriett nodded. "Yes, the Admiral made his regular visit to Bud and brought Brenda and Alan along with him. Alan even stayed the night with little AJ. The Admiral took Brenda to a movie and then home."

"Oh my God. He can't be over the case..." Harm began as Mac's office door opened and AJ and Brenda stepped out. AJ pointed in the direction of the bathrooms, and Brenda went straight to the ladies room.

AJ turned to Harm. "I'm not, Commander. I relinquished that responsibility for this case on Saturday afternoon. Admiral Morris is over this case, should the need arise." Then he turned to Mac. "Heyer is a sleezeball, Colonel. Brenda just told me that he made repeated attempts to break up the Alexander's marriage because he was infatuated with her. The assault accusations were supposed to help him get rid of Alexander. Alexander always managed to reason him out of bringing charges. Brenda isn't sure, but she believes Ben told him that she wouldn't want Heyer even if Ben was dead. Her husband never abused her, verbally or physically. He was a perfect gentleman."

"Well, now that her husband is dead, I'm surprised Heyer hasn't tried to..." started Harm.

"Oh he has, Commander. For 3 years, he repeatedly made a nuisance of himself to Brenda. He even kidnapped Alan once and then 'rescued' him... hoping to secure her favor. Alan's not a stupid kid. He told his mother exactly what happened. Brenda told Heyer if he'd just leave them alone, she wouldn't press charges against him. That was last year. She hasn't heard from him since."

Mac reasoned, "So he called his brother-in-law to ruin her husband's name. If he couldn't have her, he wanted her to suffer even more than she already did."

AJ nodded. "That'd be my guess. But it's your job to prove it." Mac grinned. "You're grinning, Colonel."

"Am I, Sir?" she quipped. Then smiled even bigger. "Something else about Heyer and Dreiver, Admiral. They're both very eager to move up in the ranks. Very eager, indeed."

Harm caught on to Mac's thought process immediately. "It'll be interesting to see their reaction when they know they're picking on a 2-star's girlfriend."

AJ sighed. "Not quite, people. But if you want to use that as leverage, be my guest. Just don't let Brenda hear you."

"What do you mean, 'not quite', Sir?" asked Harriett. "You were so happy together on Friday night."

AJ nodded. "That was Friday, Lieutenant." And he walked to his office leaving his officers a bit puzzled.

AJ looked at the phone on his desk and willed it to ring. "Come on, Darlin', call me," he said aloud. Suddenly the phone rang. He grabbed it, "Chegwidden!"

"Admiral, this is Colonel MacKenzie." AJ groaned audibly. "Is this a bad time, Sir? I can call back," she offered.

"No, Colonel. It's fine. I was just hoping for..." he stopped. He didn't need to tell Mac that he was hoping for Brenda to call. "What is it you need?"

"Admiral, I've been trying to reach Brenda Alexander since Monday afternoon, and I haven't gotten through. I'm at her house now, and it looks like she hasn't been here in a couple of days."

"She didn't tell you she was going anywhere?" AJ asked.

"No, Sir. In fact, I was hoping that she had told you..."

"No, Mac. I haven't seen or spoken to her since Monday morning in your office," he said sadly.

"I'm sorry, Sir." Mac paused. "Admiral, do you know if she has a cell phone?"

"Yes, she does. But I don't know the number. Wait! Harriett. She gave it to Harriett on Friday night." AJ buzzed Tiner on the intercom. "Tiner, send Lieutenant Sims in here right away." He clicked it off, not even waiting for Tiner's response.

A minute later, Harriett knocked on the door and entered. AJ didn't wait for her to speak. "Harriett, the card Brenda gave you on Friday night... with her cell phone number on it. Do you still have it?"

"Yes, Sir, I'm sure I do. It's on the refrigerator door at home," Harriett replied. 'Oh good, he's going to call her!' she thought. 'He's been so miserable this week. He really misses her.'

"Call Bud and get the number. Then bring it to me. Colonel MacKenzie needs it right away," AJ ordered.

"Sir, Bud is at physical therapy this afternoon; he's not home. I can run home and call it back in, though," she offered.

AJ nodded. "Go. And make it fast, Lieutenant."

"Aye, aye, Sir."

AJ spoke into the phone, "Come on back here, Mac. Harriett's going home to get the number."

"Aye, Sir. I'll be there in 20 minutes."

Harriett called with the number, and Mac dialed. She was surprised by the small voice that answered it. "Hello?"

"Hello. Is Mrs. Alexander there, please?" Mac asked.

"Mommy isn't talking to anyone right now," the little boy said.

"Is this Alan?"

"Uh huh. Who are you?" the frightened voice asked.

"Alan, my name is Colonel MacKenzie. I'm a friend of your Mommy's. Is she okay? Is she sick or hurt?"

"She's sick. Mommy's sick. The aliens came and took her voice away. All she does is lie there and cry."

"The aliens?" Mac asked, puzzled. AJ's ears perked up and he punched the speaker phone so they could both hear Alan.

"Uh huh. They came to the house and took her voice away. Then they left. They scared me. I think Mommy was scared, too. She threw our stuff into a bag and we ran away. They haven't found us yet. I just hope Agent Zee finds them first. Or finds us."

"Agent Zee?" Mac asked.

"Uh huh. We know him. He's really nice. He let me keep my memory even though I saw him drive out an alien."

Mac realized now the child was talking about the 'Men in Black' movie. She assumed he was making it all up.

But AJ knew differently. "Alan, this is Admiral AJ. Does your Mommy answer you when you talk to her?"

"No, Sir. She just turns away and hugs herself."

AJ was more than a little worried. "Alan, did the aliens hurt her? Did you hear your Mommy scream when they were there?"

"Yes, Sir. She screamed a lot. And then she didn't scream anymore at all. They took her voice away. Admiral, can you find Agent Zee? Can you tell him that we need his help?"

"Yes, Alan. I know how to find Agent Zee. He'll help you very soon." AJ didn't notice Mac's startled look. "Alan, can you tell me where you are?"

"Oh no. If I do that, the aliens might hear me. And then they'd find us before Agent Zee," the child explained.

"Alan, help me here. I have to tell Agent Zee something. Did you see anything on the side of the road as you were going where ever you are?"

Alan thought for a moment. "Uh huh. I saw a cigarette. A really, really big one. I've never seen one so big." AJ knew immediately to what the child referred. "But Mommy says I'm never to smoke cigarettes. They're bad for me."

"That's right Alan. They are bad for you. Alan, how much longer did you ride in the car after you saw the big cigarette?" AJ asked.

"Not long. A couple of minutes. I didn't have time to finish my GameBoy game."

"Okay, Alan. You just sit tight. We'll find you soon."

"You'll call Agent Zee?" the child insisted.

"As soon as we hang up. Don't worry. We'll be there soon, Son."

They hung up and AJ turned to Mac. "They're in Richmond. Let's go!" he said hurriedly as he grabbed his cover and headed out of his office.

Mac followed him out to his car; he was almost running. "Admiral," she said as she climbed in and closed the door. "I don't understand. Who is Agent Zee?"

"I am."

"Sir?"

"Alan thinks he met one of the Men in Black last week. Well, it was me. You'll recall that you and Rabb commented on my attire on Thursday? Well, I'd just been at the mall and met Alan and Brenda. I couldn't convince him I wasn't MIB, as he calls it. He's really hooked on that movie."

"Sir, what about Brenda? And who are the aliens he's talking about?"

"Most likely Heyer and Dreiver. They probably broke into the house and frightened Alan. They obviously hurt Brenda if she's not talking to her son. The question is, HOW did they hurt her?" AJ muttered under his breath, "If those bastards raped her, I'll kill them with my bare hands."

Mac heard his threatening words and shuddered. She knew he could do it. And she knew he would do it. 'God, please don't let them have raped her.' The last thing she wanted was the Admiral to be charged with murder!

AJ broke all the speed limits as they tore down the Interstate toward Richmond. Mac wasn't positive, but she was almost sure she'd seen the speedometer register 120 mph! And it felt it, too. Things were flying past them. She'd never ridden this fast in an automotive vehicle before.

It took no time at all to reach Richmond at that speed, and AJ took the exit next to the Phillip Morris tobacco plant. Mac saw the large cigarette standing tall in front of the building. "That's the big cigarette he saw," she realized.

"That's it," AJ confirmed. He pulled down another street and said, "Okay, start looking for her car. It's a red Grand Am." Mac nodded and began scanning the area. "There are a few motels right along this stretch. They're probably at one of them. We'll drive through the parking lots and see."

"There's one, Admiral!"

"Wrong state," he replied. "Virginia plates, Mac."

She nodded. Two motels later, she said again, "Admiral, there!"

"I see it, Mac." AJ pulled up behind the car. "Yep, that's it. I remember the plate number, now that I see it."

AJ parked the vehicle and went to the office, Mac following close on his heels. The little high school girl behind the front desk was scared silly when she saw a 2-star Admiral walk in. She told him instantly what he wanted to know.

"Room 345," AJ mumbled as they walked out. "She's smart. Didn't park near the room."

They went back to the Escalade, and AJ drove over to that wing. He knocked on the motel room door, and he heard Alan's voice. "Who is it?"

"It's Admiral AJ, Alan. And I have Colonel MacKenzie with me."

Alan swung the door open wide and fell into AJ's arms in tears. "I'm so glad you came!! I was so scared. And I'm hungry!" He looked past AJ and Mac. "Where's Agent Zee?"

"He told us how to find you, Alan," said AJ. He looked up at Mac and nodded toward the bed. Mac understood. She walked over to the bed and the prone form of Brenda Alexander.

"Brenda?" she said quietly. "Brenda, it's Mac. Can you hear me?" Nothing. No movement. Mac put her finger just below Brenda's nose and could feel air passing. She looked up at AJ's pale face. "She's alive, Sir. I'd say she's in shock."

"Take Alan down and get him something to eat," AJ instructed. Mac nodded and left with the child. AJ sat on the edge of the bed. "Brenda? Can you hear me, Darlin'?" Nothing. AJ laid his hand on her cheek. "Brenda? Look at me, Darlin'." Still nothing. "Alan's not here now. Mac took him down to get something to eat. Are you hungry? Do you want anything?"

She blinked.

"Brenda, do you know who I am? Do you recognize me, Darlin'?" She turned her head and stared at him, still not uttering a sound. "Brenda, it's AJ."

"Ben," Brenda's voice was so small, AJ almost didn't hear it.

"No, Darlin'. I'm not Ben. I'm AJ." Brenda said nothing more.

When Mac and Alan returned, AJ had thrown everything of theirs into the travel bag and was ready to leave. "Mac, you take the bag; I'll carry Brenda. Alan, you take Mac's hand, okay?"

"Yes, Sir." "Aye, Sir," they replied at the same time.

AJ lifted Brenda off the bed with almost no effort. She made no protest. He laid her across the back seat of the Escalade. Mac climbed in the back seat with Alan and let AJ lay Brenda's head on her lap. He got behind the wheel and headed for D.C.

Bethesda Naval Hospital

Bethesda, Maryland

AJ sat in the waiting room with Alan on his lap. The boy was sound asleep, and his face was buried in AJ's chest. Mac sat next to them, stroking the boy's head once in a while. Harm paced back and forth; he was never very patient in a hospital. Finally the doctor returned. "Admiral Chegwidden?" he addressed AJ.

AJ nodded to him but didn't move. He didn't want to disturb Alan if he didn't have to. "Well?" he asked quietly.

The doctor pulled a chair over and sat across from AJ. "Sir, Mrs. Alexander is definitely in shock, as you know."

"What else?"

"She has no bruises on her body, nor any scratches or evidence of having been beaten."

"What else?" AJ knew there was more.

"Admiral, you want to know if she was raped, and I can't tell you that. You said it was Monday night when all this happened. That was 2 days ago. It's too long to make a definite determination. All I can tell you is that she has apparently had sexual relations in the last week. There is evidence of micro abrasions, which could mean she was raped. But they're faint. Very faint. I wouldn't expect them to have faded so much if it was rape. They could also have been caused simply by rough sex. I don't know; it's impossible to tell. You said there was no husband anymore; do you know if she has a boyfriend?"

AJ glared at him. "I'd hardly call myself a 'boy', Doctor."

The doctor straightened in his chair. "My apologies, Sir. I didn't know... I didn't mean anything disrespectful..."

AJ just shook his head and changed the subject. "So, what do we do to bring her out of this?"

The doctor shifted in his seat. "Well, Sir. That sort of depends."

"On?" AJ barked.

"Admiral, your first name isn't Ben, is it?"

"No. It's AJ. Ben was her husband."

"She's mumbling in her dazed state. And she's saying his name. Can you find him?"

"He died 4 years ago, Doctor," whispered Mac. She laid her hand on AJ's arm. "Admiral, she trusts you. She obviously cares for you. Maybe if you sat with her for a while, talked to her... Maybe she'd come out of this on her own."

The doctor agreed, "That's the only way she will come out of this, Colonel... on her own."

Alan stirred in AJ's lap, so he took advantage of it and moved Alan to a prone position on the sofa. He leaned over and kissed Alan's forehead. Then he turned around and said, "Mac, I expect you and Harm will take care of Alan?" Mac nodded. "You might want to call Harriett; Alan and little AJ get along quite well. And you'll be in charge at the office today." He shifted his attention to the doctor. "Lead the way."

AJ sat with Brenda through the rest of the night. He talked to her. He touched her gently. He even sang softly. Just as the sun was peeking out above the horizon, AJ stood up for the first time since he took his place next to her. He walked into the small bathroom and relieved himself. He didn't know that tears slipped down Brenda's face when she no longer felt his presence next to her.

While he was in the bathroom, the doctor entered and checked Brenda's vitals. Brenda's eyes fluttered open and a small smile appeared on her lips. "You came back," she whispered. "Oh Ben, you came back."

"Mrs. Alexander, I'm Doctor..." the doctor began, but she didn't listen.

"I'm so glad. I need to explain."

"Ma'am, I'm your doctor. You've had a rough..."

"You probably already know all about it, Ben. I suppose in Heaven you can see everything that goes on down here?"

The doctor was startled. As was AJ. But AJ hung back. He didn't want Brenda to see him; it might send her back into shock. Then again, she might still be in shock; he wasn't sure.

"Ben, dear, you know I love you. I always have. But Darling, you told me you wanted me to go on with my life if anything happened to you. You told me you wanted me to love again. To find someone who would love me and love our son." Brenda began crying. "I thought I found him, Ben. I was so sure. He's so wonderful. He's so..." She turned her head away from the doctor. "Why, Ben? Why did you tell me you wanted me to love again if you didn't really?"

The doctor didn't say anything. Brenda turned back to face him. "Ben? Answer me. Please," she begged. "Why are you haunting my dreams? Is it because he's an Admiral? He's too good for me, is that it? Surely you wouldn't want me to end up with that horrible man Heyer."

The doctor shook his head in confusion. Brenda took it as a response to her question. "I'm so glad, because I couldn't ever do that, Ben." She reached out to take the doctor's hand. "I won't ever do it again, Ben. I'll never be unfaithful to you again. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me for misunderstanding you. Forgive me, Ben. Forgive me..." and she drifted back to sleep.

The doctor gently laid her hand back on the bed and turned to face AJ. AJ asked, "Was she really awake?"

The doctor nodded. "I'm afraid so, Admiral."

AJ sighed. "So she'll remember talking to 'Ben'." The doctor nodded again. "Then I shouldn't be here when she wakes up."

"Admiral, I think..."

"I'll have Colonel MacKenzie come down and sit with her. She'll be more at ease with her here," AJ continued. "Thank you, Doctor." AJ turned to leave. "Oh, but I would appreciate a status report on her condition. Twice a day."

JAG Headquarters

Falls Church, Virginia

AJ blew into the JAG Ops bullpen, surprising everyone. They all knew he was at Bethesda. "Attention on deck!" Tiner called as he realized it truly was the Admiral he was seeing.

"As you were!" AJ barked in return. "Colonel, my office!" It was now quite obvious that he was not in a good mood. AJ entered his office to find papers scattered across his desk. "Tiner! What the hell is all this?" he bellowed.

Tiner quickly went to the Admiral's desk and began to pile the papers and remove them. "I'm sorry, Admiral. I was using your desk to sort things for filing, Sir. Your desk is so much bigger, and it's easier... It won't happen again, Sir."

"Where's the Colonel?"

"Reporting as ordered, Admiral," Mac said as she entered his office and came to attention stance.

"Mac, I want you to go back to Bethesda. Stay with Brenda until she's coherent."

"Admiral, I thought you..."

"She doesn't want me there, Colonel. And I don't intend to force my presence on her."

"I'll leave right away, Sir."

"Good. Dismissed."

Mac turned and left the Admiral's office. As she closed the door, she heard him swear, "Damn! How the hell could I have fallen for her so fast?"

Bethesda Naval Hospital

Bethesda, Maryland

Mac sat in the chair next to the window in Brenda's room. She had her computer on her lap and didn't notice when Brenda woke up. "Mac?" she spoke softly.

Mac turned her eyes toward the bed. "Brenda! You're awake!" Mac set her laptop on the chair and went to Brenda's bedside. "How are you feeling?"

"Confused."

"That's understandable," said Mac.

"Where am I?" Brenda asked. "I mean, I know I'm in a hospital. That's obvious," she commented as she glanced around the room. "But where?"

"Bethesda Naval," Mac told her.

"The last I remember, I was in Richmond... in a motel.. with Alan." Suddenly she became very agitated. "Where is Alan? Is he okay?"

Mac calmed her. "Alan is fine, Brenda. He's with the Roberts. He and little AJ are having a ball together." As Mac said the name "AJ", she noticed Brenda flinch. "Brenda, what happened?"

"They came to the house, Mac. They rang the doorbell, and I didn't even think to look first. I just opened the door and they barged in. Heyer grabbed me and took him upstairs to my bedroom. I was so scared."

Just as Mac was going to probe further, the doctor entered the room. "Well! You're awake! That's wonderful. And how are you feeling this afternoon, Mrs. Alexander?"

"I'm fine, Doctor...?"

"Doctor Morrison," he said as he checked her vitals and made some notes on her chart. "And I'd have to agree with you there; you are fine. I'd like you to stay with us one more night, though... just to be sure you don't slip away from us again. Would that be okay?"

"What exactly was wrong, Doctor?" Brenda asked, confused. "I wasn't injured. Why am I here?"

The doctor looked from Brenda to Mac and back to Brenda. "You've been in an almost comatose state of shock for a good while, Mrs. Alexander."

"Oh," she replied quietly.

"I think it would be best if you stayed over another night," agreed Mac.

"What about Alan?" Brenda asked.

"He can just stay where he is, or he can go home with me, if you'd rather."

"Where did he stay last night?"

"He spent most of it in the waiting room... on the Admiral's lap, sound asleep. When the Admiral came in here, I took Alan home with me," Mac explained. She noticed Brenda flinch again when she said "Admiral". "Brenda, are you sure you're okay?"

Brenda's expression turned to one of utter desolation. "Yes, I'm fine, Mac. Alone. But fine."

"You don't have to be alone, Brenda. The Admiral..."

"No!" she replied quickly. "No, I won't be seeing AJ any more. We're not right for each other."

"I disagree," countered Mac. "But that isn't my business; it's yours." She turned back to her computer as the doctor left the room. "Oh gosh, I'm still connected... tying up the phone line." Mac quickly logged off and disconnected the phone cord from her computer. She plugged it back into the phone on the bedside table. Almost immediately, the phone rang.

Brenda reached for it and said, "Hello?" There was stunned silence on the other end for a moment, so she repeated, "Hello?"

"Brenda?" AJ's soft voice came over the wire. He'd had her phone on automatic redial for two hours. Now that the call finally went through, he found himself tongue-tied. He'd expected Mac to answer the phone, not Brenda.

'Oh God... help me!' she recognized the voice immediately. "Admiral Chegwidden. Hello. I imagine you're looking for Colonel MacKenzie. She's right here... Mac?" Brenda held the receiver up to Mac so didn't hear AJ's rebuttal... but Mac did.

"Darlin', please... can't we talk about this? You must know how I feel about you."

"I'm sorry, Sir," said Mac quietly into the mouthpiece.

"Damn," he swore. "How is she, Mac?"

"Seems to be fine now, Sir. The doctor wants to keep her another night, though, just to be sure. She's concerned about where Alan will stay. I told her he could stay with..."

"He'll stay with me," AJ answered quickly. "I'm on my way to pick him up as soon as I leave here."

"Very good, Sir."

"Tell her not to worry; Alan is perfectly safe."

"I'll tell her, Admiral."

"And Mac?"

"Sir?

"Thank you."

Mac was going to respond, but she heard the click when he hung up the phone and then a dial tone. She smiled to herself, wondering how it would be to be loved by that man. She couldn't imagine why any woman would not want him. But Brenda seemed determined to block him out of her life. Mac looked down at Brenda. Should she brooch the subject? Should she interfere in their relationship?

Brenda made the decision for her. "So will Alan stay with you?" she asked Mac.

Mac shook her head. "No, Brenda. He's going to stay with the Admiral." Brenda gasped. "He's leaving now to pick him up from Harriett's."

"No, he can't. Alan shouldn't get attached..."

"Brenda. I'm not going to call the Admiral back and tell him that he can't keep Alan overnight. If you don't want him to, you will have to call him."

"But I can't. I can't call him."

"Why?"

"I just can't!" Brenda's eyes filled with tears, but she willed them not to fall.

Mac sat on the edge of the bed and laid her hand over Brenda's. "Brenda, the Admiral cares deeply for you. Very deeply."

"And how many others?" she asked through her tears.

"No others," Mac shook her head. "I've known the Admiral for years, Brenda. He is not a womanizer. In the 6 years I've known him, he's had 2 girlfriends."

Brenda gave Mac a questioning look. "Two? That's all?"

"The first one was a Judge. Her name was Laura. Laura Delaney. He watched her die. She was murdered in his place."

Brenda gasped and her tears flowed freely down her cheeks. "That's awful!"

Mac nodded. "Yes, it is. He tried to convince her not to see him for a while... until they were able to apprehend the man who was stalking him. But she wouldn't listen. And she stepped on a landmine planted at his house... meant for him."

Brenda paled. "A landmine?"

"That's right. She wasn't as lucky as Bud. And she didn't live as long as your husband after it. She died in the Emergency Room, right here at Bethesda, as he watched. He didn't even get to say goodbye to her." Mac's eyes welled up with tears of her own and they slipped silently down her cheeks. "That was only a month after I met him."

Both women were quiet for several minutes, trying to regain control of their emotions. Mac was staring out the window when Brenda said, "Who was the second one?"

"She's a doctor. They only lasted about 6 months, if that. I don't know exactly; he never said."

"What happened?"

"She let her grown son walk all over her, lie to her, manipulate her. The Admiral tried to make her see the truth. He lost."

"Sounds more to me like he won," Brenda said. "A woman who doesn't have control over her own children isn't much of a woman, in my opinion."

"Mine either," agreed Mac with a grin.

"And that's all?"

"Well, Harm and Sturgis both tried to fix him up with friends of theirs earlier this year. But those fell pretty flat. Then he met a friend of mine, and I thought maybe something would take shape. They dated a couple of times... then nothing. He's a very intense man, Brenda. Not all women can handle that."

"Ben was an intense man."

"What happened, Brenda? What happened to change your mind about the Admiral?" Mac asked boldly.

Brenda sighed. "I didn't change my mind."

Mac looked at her, surprised. "But I thought..."

"How much do you know, Mac?" Brenda asked.

"Only that Alan stayed the night with little AJ on Friday. And you and the Admiral left together. I try not to assume anything where my CO is concerned," Mac grinned.

Brenda laughed. "I can understand that." She closed her eyes and began speaking. "We went to a movie. He's incredible, you know. Truly, incredible. Then we went to my place."

"Wait. AT the movie?" Mac was shocked.

Brenda blushed furiously. "Mmm hmm. At home was even better. But I had a dream during the night. I was supposed to meet AJ in a parking lot. When I got there, he was there in his Cadillac. But Ben was there, too, in his ancient Corvair... the one he had when we first started dating. I was so shocked to see him. I went to the car window and he rolled it down and spoke to me. He said, 'You have to choose, Brenda. Him or me.' I looked at AJ in his SUV, and he was smiling at me. I looked back at Ben, and he was frowning. He said, 'Make your choice, Brenda. Him or me.' I remember crying in my dream. I couldn't choose. When I woke up, I was in AJ's arms. His neck was all wet from my tears. And the pillow was drenched."

"Did he wake up?"

Brenda nodded. "Yes."

"Did you tell him about the dream?"

She shook her head. "No. I couldn't."

"What happened?"

"I ignored it. And begged him to make love to me again."

Mac grinned. "Somehow I don't think you had to beg very hard."

Brenda almost giggled. "No, it wasn't difficult convincing him, that's true," she remembered.

"But you changed your mind later?"

Brenda nodded. "We went back to sleep and when I woke up next, I'd had the same dream again. Only this time, Ben told me that if I chose AJ, I'd never see Ben again." She sniffed. "I couldn't do it. I couldn't. I told AJ I'd made a mistake. And that, as they say, was that."

"Brenda, don't you think it could have just been guilt because you were finally feeling something again for a man?"

"Maybe. But even then. What must AJ think of me? I let him in my pants the first time we went out together. He must think I'm a total slut."

Mac shook her head. "No, Brenda. He doesn't. If he thought that, he wouldn't have broken every law on the highway yesterday to get to you. He wouldn't have sat in that waiting room with your son on his lap, letting him drool all over his uniform as he slept. He wouldn't have sat in here with you all night. He wouldn't..."

"What?"

"What, what?" asked Mac, confused.

"What did you say? AJ sat here with me all night?" Brenda asked for clarification.

"Yes, he did. I took Alan home with me, and the Admiral came in here and stayed with you. I only got here at 1040 this morning."

"When did he leave? What time?" Brenda asked urgently.

"I don't know exactly," Mac said. "Brenda, what is it? What's wrong?"

"Here now, Mrs. Alexander," said the doctor as he walked in to find his patient very disturbed. "What's going on? You were doing so well. Something troubling you?"

"Doctor, do you know what time the Admiral left here this morning?" asked Mac.

"It was just after daybreak... I'd say probably 0630... maybe a tad later," the doctor replied. "Why?"

"Are you sure, Doctor? It was that late?" asked Brenda, remembering.

"Mrs. Alexander, what is it you're afraid of? That the Admiral heard your conversation with your late husband?" She gasped. He nodded. "Yes, I thought so. And yes. He did hear it. All of it. That's when he left."

"Then it wasn't Ben who was here with me last night. It was AJ who spoke to me... who touched me... even sang to me..." Brenda realized. "Wait. How do you know about Ben's being here?"

"Because it was me, Mrs. Alexander. You thought I was your late husband," the doctor explained gently.

Brenda squeezed her eyes shut. "Oh God... What have I done? Oh AJ..."

"Nothing that can't be undone, Brenda," whispered Mac as she picked up her hand and held it. "The Admiral is a very understanding man. He's kind. Gentle. And I do believe he'd do just about anything for you right now..."

"Damn straight, I would," AJ's voice sounded from the doorway. No one had noticed him push the door open as he followed the doctor into the room.

"AJ," she breathed, gazing at him. "You're here?"

"I found myself driving here instead of to Harriett's. I had to check on you myself before I picked up Alan... be sure you were really okay," he said by way of explanation. He walked to the side of the bed and sat where he'd sat the night before. "Brenda, I don't want to push you into anything you're not ready for, but I care..."

She reached her finger up and laid it over his lips. "No. Don't say it. Please. Not yet. Not until I've explained."

Mac and the doctor both left the room quietly; neither AJ nor Brenda wanted their presence, it was obvious.

"Brenda, you don't have to explain anything. I know. I understand."

"No, I don't think you do. AJ, I had a dream..." and Brenda proceeded to tell AJ about the dream she had while in bed with him.

"Darlin', Ben is gone. I'm sorry for that, but it's true. He's gone, and he's never coming back. He can never hold you again. He can never love you again."

"I know that," Brenda said through her tears.

"And letting yourself love again... be loved again... is not being unfaithful to him."

"What about Alan?" she asked.

"What about him?"

"What will he think of his mother just... just forgetting all about his father and..."

"Brenda, moving on to a new love does not mean you'll forget about him. You'll want to tell Alan about his father. He should know about him. But that doesn't preclude you from being happy again." Brenda lifted her tear-streaked face to his. "Let me be the one to hold you now, Brenda. Let me love you," AJ urged as he lowered his mouth to hers.

Brenda slipped her arms around AJ's neck and deepened their kiss.

Alan's birthday party was in full swing. There were a total of 12 boys present, including Alan. Mac and Harriett were there to help Brenda with the party.

"Alan is really sold on that movie, isn't he?" said Mac, laughing as she saw all the 'Men in Black' decorations.

"Completely!" laughed Brenda. "And he still thinks he knows one of the agents. He just won't believe that Agent Zee is really AJ."

Harriett laughed. "Why doesn't the Admiral just dress that way once for him... and then he'll see."

Brenda grinned. "He did that already. Didn't convince my son! And of course, he's expecting Agent Zee to show up here today at his party."

"What?" asked Harriett and Mac together.

"He wrote him a letter. Even mailed it," Brenda shook her head. "I just hate that he's going to be disappointed, but I guess it can't be helped."

"Where is the Admiral today, anyway?" asked Harriett. "I thought he'd be here."

"He had a call from the SecNav last night. He's at the Pentagon today," Brenda sighed.

Mac grinned to herself. 'Yea, a likely story. I wonder what he's up to.' She knew full well that the SecNav was on vacation with his wife in Tahiti. And she knew that the Admiral had called both Harm and Sturgis into his office yesterday for a closed-door session with Webb. When they emerged an hour later, they were all grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat.

"Brenda, what ever happened to those two men? The ones who were accusing your late husband of..."

"They're dead, Harriett," whispered Mac, shaking her head to keep her from asking anymore questions. But Brenda had heard the question, so she answered, too.

"They came to the house the day AJ brought me home from the hospital. This time he answered the door. In uniform," she grinned. "They were surprised, to say the least. AJ recognized them from their pictures, and he let them have it. I don't know exactly what he said to them, but it worked. They left... quickly... scared to death. They had a wreck a few miles away. Evidently they pulled out in front of a semi, and the semi didn't have time to react. He was loaded and couldn't stop. There was no where for him to go. He rammed them from behind and it was like an accordion. They didn't stand a chance."

"How dreadful," said Harriett.

"Yes, it was. I'm glad they're not here to bother me anymore, but I didn't want them to die. They didn't deserve that," Brenda replied.

"All set, gentlemen?" AJ asked the three men in his living room.

"Yes, Sir," they replied.

"Now remember, no 'Sir' this afternoon. I'm Agent Zee. Harm, you're Agent Cee. Sturgis, you're Agent Dee. And Webb, you're the alien 'Tendrils' coming for revenge. Your Earth name is 'Ten', remember. And you were infatuated with Serleena and you hate Agent Jay because he put you in prison."

"And Agent Jay is who, again?" asked Webb.

"Agent Jay is in the movie, Webb. He's not with us today," Harm explained.

"Okay."

"Admiral, do you really think this is going to work? You think they'll believe it?" asked Sturgis.

"Absolutely," AJ told him. The men looked at him strangely. "I know, I know... but Alan is only 8. And the other boys are the same age or younger. It'll look real to them. Just be sure not to be too scary. We don't want to upset the women." They men laughed their understanding. "Okay, let's head out. Webb, you go on ahead and hide. When we get there, show yourself... but be sure no one else sees you first!"

"Alan!" Brenda called. "Gather all your friends at the picnic table so we can have birthday cake and ice cream now."

"Mommy! We can't! Agent Zee isn't here yet," Alan protested.

"Alan, Agent Zee is probably very busy chasing aliens right now. I'm sure he wanted to come today, but sometimes people can't do everything they want to do."

"Like Admiral AJ having to work today?" asked Alan in a small voice.

Brenda nodded. "I'm sorry, Sweetheart. I know you wanted him here today. But he has an important job. And he had to..."

"I know Mom. It's okay. Can I open my presents now?"

His mother laughed at his instant change of attitude. "Not until we've had your birthday cake," Brenda told him.

"Then can we have that now?" he pleaded.

"Go call your friends to the picnic table."

Alan was just ready to dart back to his friends when he saw Agent Zee rounding the corner of the house. "Agent Zee!! You came! You came!!"

AJ grinned from ear to ear as he saw everyone turn and stare at him. He was dressed just as before... in a black suit, white shirt, black tie, black shoes & socks... and of course, black sunglasses. 'Damned good thing it didn't rain. Wouldn't have needed the glasses!'

Alan ran over to him, but AJ held him off. He was concerned that if he picked him up, Alan might realize the truth... that he was really Admiral AJ. And for today... for the party... he wanted Alan to still believe in Agent Zee. "Don't mess the suit, Boy," AJ said.

"Oh! Sorry," Alan said quickly, backing away a little.

"I hear someone's having a birthday," AJ said taking off his sunglasses and peering down at Alan.

"Me! I am! I'm 8 today," Alan replied as the guests gathered closer.

"Good age," AJ nodded. "I got your letter. We'll have to discuss that later. I need to know how you found out the address for MIB headquarters, Boy."

Alan looked almost frightened. "You mean I was right?" he whispered. "I guessed. Honest, Agent Zee. I guessed."

AJ nodded. "Yes, well... we'll see about that. May have to zap you yet."

"Oh no! Please, Agent Zee; I won't tell anyone. Not even my mom or the Admiral."

"Admiral? What Admiral?" AJ asked suspiciously, looking around.

Alan gulped. "Admiral AJ. He's not here. He's at the Pentagon. He had to work today."

"Is he someone special?" AJ asked.

Alan lowered his chin, but raised his eyes. "Uh huh. He's gonna be my new Daddy."

"Alan!" cried Brenda, moving to Alan.

"Now, now... let the boy talk," said AJ holding his hand up to stop her. "Go on. He's going to be your Daddy... and are you happy about that?"

Alan nodded his head. "Uh huh."

"You don't sound too sure to me," AJ said.

"Oh I am. I just don't want to get him in trouble with you. I don't think it would be a good thing if you zapped him."

AJ shook his head. "Already had to zap Chegwidden a few times. He sees too much."

"You know who I mean?"

"Of course I do. He called me a few weeks ago about you. You told him to, remember? You and your mom were in some kind of trouble."

Alan brightened. "Oh yeah! He said he knew you!"

AJ nodded. "He'll be glad to have a little boy to call 'Son'." Then he looked up at Brenda, "And he'll be glad to have your mom, too," he said with an evil glint in his eye.

Brenda blushed furiously. "Shall we have cake now?" she squeaked.

As all the boys gathered around the picnic table with AJ taking his seat next to Alan, the women brought the cake and ice cream outside. Mac lit the candles, and they sang Happy Birthday. As they finished, Alan gasped and pointed at the bushes. "Agent Zee! Did you see that?"

AJ had seen it. It was Webb. "See what, Boy?" he pretended.

"I thought I saw an alien," Alan said quietly.

"An alien?!" screamed one of the boys. "Where?!"

The boys all jumped up from the table and ran, following Alan. 'Uh oh,' thought AJ. 'This is something we didn't plan on... the boys chasing him!'

Just as the boys reached the bushes, Webb darted out from the other side of the yard. 'How did he get over there so fast?' wondered AJ. 'Damn, he sure looked bigger than Webb, too.'

"There! There he is!" cried one of the boys.

They all ran in that direction, but suddenly came to a complete stop when AJ stood up from the table. "Boys!" he bellowed. "You best not be chasing an alien. They're dangerous. Leave that to the MIB." They all nodded. AJ turned to the women. "If you'll excuse me, ladies, I'll see about taking care of our unwanted guest."

"Thank you, Agent Zee," smiled Brenda.

"Sorry to barge in on the party," Harm said as he and Sturgis came around the corner of the house. The boys gasped in surprise. Here were two more Men in Black, and these two carried weapons!

Sturgis continued, "Zee, we've had a report that Ten survived and is loose. He couldn't find Jay or Kay, so he's after you."

Alan gasped. "Ten?! As in Tendrils? Oh wow!!"

The three men looked down at Alan. "How do you know about Tendrils?" Harm asked him.

He gulped and his voice rose an octave in answer. "He was in the movie."

AJ nodded. "He's right. He was," he told his two cohorts. "Alan saw an alien just a minute ago. Probably Ten, if what you say is correct."

Suddenly Webb ran across the back of the yard screaming, "Watch your back, Zee! I'll get you when you least expect it!!"

The boys screamed and ran to the three women, huddling together, shaking and crying in fear. The men knew they were in big trouble now. They looked at each other. 'Uh oh.'

"It's okay, Boys," said Sturgis. "We're old pros at this. Ten won't hurt anyone. We'll get him," he assured them.

Harm handed AJ his Ball gun. "Cee, you know I prefer the Wacky gun! Why'd you bring me this piece of junk?" AJ complained as they headed for the bushes.

Suddenly there was a noise behind them, and Alan screamed, "Agent Zee, behind you!!"

AJ whirled around to find a large black man with an eye on his forehead coming right at him. 'What the...?'

Harm and Sturgis turned around just in time to see him tackle the Admiral. 'Uh oh.'

"Zee, you okay?" yelled Harm.

"Perfect!" AJ growled, getting up and grabbing his Ball gun, but the alien was gone. 'That sure as hell looked like Chaplain Turner.'

Webb ran out of the bushes again and right into Harm's backside, knocking him down. It was all the women could do not to laugh. Something was obviously going wrong. None of them believed that Harm or AJ would have agreed to get tackled in this little game. As Webb scurried to his feet to run off, Harm reached for one of the tendrils on Webb's mask. 'God, I hope I got the one that's loose!' He pulled and it came off in his hand. Webb screamed as though in agony and fell to the ground, rolling into the bushes.

"Oh no you don't," hollered AJ. He fired his Ball gun into the bushes. Webb quickly ripped off the mask and threw it out from the bushes into the yard. "That'll take care of you, Ten, once and for all!"

The boys cheered for Agent Zee when they saw the mask come flying out from the bushes. But then gasped when they saw Third-Eye Guy heading straight for Agent Dee. "Look out!" they cried. "It's Slim!!"

AJ turned around to see the big black man try to tackle Sturgis. But Sturgis knew he was coming and put his hand out... catching him right in the third eye. The alien screamed. He put his hands over his third eye and tottered to the bushes.

"You're not getting away that easily, Slim!" yelled AJ. He fired the Ball gun again. Nothing. He tried again. Still nothing. 'Damn... no balls left.'

Alan yelled to him. "The Wacky Gun! The Wacky Gun!" he pointed to the ground near AJ.

AJ grabbed Sturgis' Wacky Gun from the ground, turned, and fired in the same direction. There was a low growl... that turned into a roar before it was perfectly silent. Then a large eyeball came rolling into the yard.

The boys cheered, "Hooray!! Hooray!!"

"Any more?" asked AJ.

"Nope." "Didn't see anymore," Harm and Sturgis replied.

"Good. We'd better get out of here then. Don't want to mess up the boy's birthday party any more than we already have," said AJ.

Alan and the boys were gathered around them, when they suddenly got very nervous. Harm looked at Sturgis and AJ. "Dee, you take those 6. Zee, you take the other boys. I'll take the women," Harm said as he wiggled his eyebrows at Mac.

"You're gonna zap us, aren't you?" asked Alan. He looked up at AJ. "Please don't zap us, Agent Zee. We won't say anything."

"Have to, Boy," said AJ. "You can't know about all this. Best to forget."

Brenda smiled. She knew Alan would never forget this birthday.

The boys looked at each other. Then one boldly asked, "Will it hurt?"

Sturgis shook his head. "Not in the least. You won't feel a thing."

The three men each took out a long silver rod from their breast pocket. A bright light flashed in each boys' eyes... and the three women's eyes... and the three Men in Black disappeared around the corner of the house.

Alan was the first to speak. "Mom?" his voice was shaky. "Mom?"

"I'm right here, Alan. Boys! Come on and gather around now, and Alan can open his presents!"

Alan turned to his mother. "Mom, do you remember anything?"

"Of course I do, Sweetie. I remember it's your birthday, and you haven't opened your presents. Come on!"

"No, I mean about Agent Zee and..."

"Now, Alan, are you going to start with all that nonsense again? I told you, it's just a movie."

Alan turned and looked at his friends. They all nodded their heads. They remembered. But they knew they weren't supposed to remember. So they couldn't tell anyone they remembered... or the Men in Black would come back for them!

Meanwhile, around front, AJ, Harm, and Sturgis met up with Webb and Sturgis' father. "Chaplain Turner! How in the world did you happen to get involved in this little charade?" asked AJ.

The senior Turner chuckled. "Well, I'll tell you, Admiral. My boy was telling me about the fun he was going to have today playing a new version of cowboys & Indians. And I just thought it sounded like too much fun to pass up."

AJ shook his head. "Well, you sure surprised me!"

"And me!" said his son. "Dad, I had no idea you'd show up here today! How'd you even know the address?"

"I didn't," his father said. "I just followed you to the Admiral's house. And then followed the lot of you over here," he chuckled. "Not very observant, are you?"

AJ said, "Well, gentlemen, thank you for agreeing to participate in this little birthday surprise. I'm sure Alan was delighted. His mother? Now that's questionable," AJ quipped.

"Oh, Admiral, I don't think you'll have much trouble setting her mind at ease about all this," said Harm.

AJ grinned wolfishly. "Sure gonna be a hell of a lot of fun, I'll tell you." He saw the questioning looks on the men's faces. "Oh that's right. You didn't hear. When I walked in earlier, Alan announced that Admiral AJ is going to be his new Daddy."

"What?" "Oh my God!" "Well, I'll be!" The men chorused.

"What did Brenda say to that, AJ?" asked Webb.

"She got rather flustered and embarrassed. I wouldn't let her say anything," AJ laughed. "But you can bet we'll talk about it tonight after Admiral AJ puts the youngster to bed. Early." They laughed with him. "I'd better get inside and change clothes. I need to show up before the party's over as Admiral AJ. I promised Alan."

The men dispersed, and AJ quickly changed. He walked out the back door just as Alan finished opening the last of his presents. He turned and saw AJ and darted over to him, leaping into his arms the way little AJ always did. "Admiral AJ! You came!!"

"Of course, I came, Son. I made you a promise. And I always do my best to keep my promises."

They walked over to the group of party-goers, and Alan introduced Admiral AJ to his friends.

"Wow, are you a real Admiral?" "How many stars do you have?" "You must have a lot of scrambled eggs on your cover," the boys said in turn.

AJ laughed at the last one. "So, you're a Navy boy, too, hmm?" he asked the youngster. The boy nodded. "Yes, I have a lot of scrambled eggs on my cover. Alan can show it to you when you all go inside. He knows where I put my cover." Then AJ turned to another boy. "Two stars. Alan can show you those, too, if you want."

"Let's go!!" the boys cried, jumping up and running toward the house.

Alan ran with them, but he stopped before he got very far. He turned around and asked, "Mom? Is it okay if I go in your room to show the boys Admiral AJ's uniform?"

Brenda smiled. "Yes, Alan. You may."

He turned and ran after the other boys.

AJ got up and hugged Brenda, kissing her lightly on the lips. "What was that about?" he asked, not really minding that Harriett and Mac were right there.

"I told Alan he must always ask me before he goes in my bedroom now."

"Why?" AJ asked.

"He walked in on us last night," Brenda informed him. "You didn't hear him either?"

AJ shook his head. "No. And that's surprising."

Brenda blushed. "Well, not really." She took his arm and walked him away from the others a few yards. "He said I was groaning really loud and he was afraid something was wrong. He opened the door and saw you with me, so he decided I must be okay and he left without saying anything."

"Did he see what we were doing?" AJ asked quietly.

Brenda smiled. "No. But he saw your naked butt in the air," she giggled.

"Oh God," AJ sighed. "What'd you tell him?"

"He wanted to know what we were doing. I told him that we were doing what grownups do when they love each other." Brenda's voice dropped in volume on these last words.

AJ put his hand on her chin and lifted her head until her eyes met his. "Are you, Brenda? Are you in love with me?" he asked. Tears formed in her eyes, but she willed them not to fall. "Would it help if I said I was head over heals in love with you?" he asked.

"Oh, AJ!" she fell into his arms and he hugged her tightly. She lifted her head to his and he claimed her mouth. "I was just mortified when Alan said that earlier about your being his new Daddy."

"Don't you want me to be?"

"Of course I do," she breathed. "But..."

"But nothing, Darlin'. All it takes is a 'yes' from you to an age-old question." He drew Brenda over to the picnic table and sat her on the bench. Then he got down on one knee and took her hand in his. "I love you, Brenda Gaye Alexander. Will you marry me?"

Just then the boys came storming out of the house, Alan in the lead. "Admiral AJ! Why are you on the ground? Did Mommy lose another earring?"

AJ grinned as he turned to the boy who would soon become his son. "No, Alan. I just asked your Mommy if she would be my wife. That would mean I would get to be your new Daddy. Is that okay?"

"Hoo yah!!" the boy yelled. "That's the best birthday present of all!!" Alan jumped up and down and then jumped on AJ's back and hugged his neck. AJ stood up and bounced him around the yard, as though he was riding a horse. "Hoo yah!!" the boy yelled again.

Later, after all the boys had gone, and Mac and Harriett helped Brenda clean up the mess from the party, they offered her their congratulations. Brenda flushed. "Thank you. I didn't realize today would be so eventful."

"It was a wonderful day, Brenda," said Mac.

"Welcome to the JAG family," said Harriett. "You won't be sorry... not in the least."

"Bye," they all said as the two women left, Harriett carrying a sleeping little AJ.

Brenda closed the door and turned to find AJ standing in the living room. "Alan's sound asleep," he informed her.

She spoke as she walked across the room to him. "You made this birthday his best yet, AJ. I can't begin to thank you for all you did. I can't believe you pulled off that charade. It really was incredible." Brenda lifted her arms and encircled his neck, pulling his head down to hers.

Before their lips met, AJ whispered, "You didn't answer me, earlier, Brenda. Will you marry me?"

Brenda's face lit up with a smile and she purred, "Only if I can marry both of you."

"Both of me?" he asked, confused.

"Mmm hmm. Admiral AJ and Agent Zee."

The end.
